Gemini CLI is the design-and-multi-file pick. Where Claude Code reasons across files for refactors and Codex executes tight surgical changes, Gemini CLI excels at layout work, visual design passes, and schema modeling — the tasks where you’re rearranging structure across many files.

Strengths

Multi-file layout work

“Restructure the dashboard with a sidebar layout” or “convert this page from grid to flex” — Gemini handles the cascading changes cleanly.

Visual / design intuition

Stronger sense for spacing, hierarchy, and component composition than the others.

Schema modeling

“Design a schema for a hierarchical comment system” — Gemini’s schema proposals are thoughtful about indexes and access patterns.

Long context

Handles long prompts and large codebases comfortably.

When to pick Gemini CLI

“Redesign the home page with a hero, three-column features, and a CTA section.” Gemini.

Usage

Same as the other agents — change the agent dropdown to Gemini CLI before submitting, or set it as your default.

Tips

For schema design, Plan mode + Gemini is the strongest combo. Gemini produces detailed plans; you review and tweak before code generation.
Switch to Claude Code or Codex for follow-up edits. Gemini for the structural pass, then a faster agent for the iteration on top.

Claude Code

Default; large refactors.

OpenAI Codex

Surgical edits.
