Agents occasionally have outages or rate limits — usually short, but they happen. vly has fallback behavior to keep you working.

How it works

1

Your prompt submits with the selected agent

Normal path.
2

If the agent is unavailable

The provider returns an error (rate limit, outage, timeout). vly surfaces a notification.
3

vly suggests a fallback

“OpenAI Codex is currently unavailable. Run with Claude Code instead?”
4

You confirm or wait

Confirm: same prompt runs on the fallback agent. Wait: vly polls and notifies when the original agent is back.

Configuring auto-fallback

By default, vly asks before falling back. To make fallback automatic:
  • Workspace settings → Preferences → “Auto-fallback to next available agent”. Toggle on.
The fallback order is:
  1. Selected agent
  2. Claude Code (if not selected)
  3. OpenAI Codex (if not selected)
  4. Gemini CLI (if not selected)

When you might disable auto-fallback

For prompts where agent choice matters (e.g., you specifically picked Gemini for layout work), disable auto-fallback so vly waits rather than silently switching to a less-suitable agent.
