# Fallback behavior

> What happens when your selected agent is unavailable — provider outages, rate limits, or maintenance.

Agents occasionally have outages or rate limits — usually short, but they happen. vly has fallback behavior to keep you working.

## How it works

    The provider returns an error (rate limit, outage, timeout). vly surfaces a notification.

    "OpenAI Codex is currently unavailable. Run with Claude Code instead?"
  </Step>

  <Step title="You confirm or wait">
    Confirm: same prompt runs on the fallback agent. Wait: vly polls and notifies when the original agent is back.

## Configuring auto-fallback

By default, vly **asks before falling back**. To make fallback automatic:

* Workspace settings → Preferences → "Auto-fallback to next available agent". Toggle on.

The fallback order is:

1. Selected agent
2. Claude Code (if not selected)
3. OpenAI Codex (if not selected)
4. Gemini CLI (if not selected)

## When you might disable auto-fallback

For prompts where agent choice matters (e.g., you specifically picked Gemini for layout work), **disable auto-fallback** so vly waits rather than silently switching to a less-suitable agent.
